The Forbes Shires Housing Strategy will ensure that Council is equitably and strategically planning for housing in the shire and to do this we need the input of people across the whole community to make sure that it is a success. It’s a great a chance for you to work with us to shape our towns future!

Currently there is increased demand for housing in regional NSW and Council wants to ensure there is a mix of options available for both buyers and renters. Also it is well known that the rental market here has been fully subscribed for some time and there is a need for much more rental housing in Forbes. Strategies for these issues will be addressed in the plan. 

Forbes is expecting significant growth in the next ten (10) years and we need to plan for the future to ensure we have infrastructure and essential services to accommodate to population growth – and that is best done by a considered and widely consulted strategy.

The strategy will help us to address other shortfalls. For example do we need smaller units or flats as many are looking to downsize from larger rural locations and want a smaller holding in town. This is the sort of information we need to know. It will also give us valuable information to work with other partners such as businesses and support services such as childcare.

Please make sure that you take up these opportunities to make sure that our plan is a thorough one that meets the needs of our community.

As more people choose to call Forbes home, housing growth needs to be planned and managed in a way that maintains the town’s key characteristics, liveability and creates additional benefits, including:

• increased supply of affordable housing;
• greater choice and diversity of housing; and
• well-designed internal and outdoor communal spaces
